KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysian police are investigating two policemen who allegedly extorted 500 ringgit ($131.6) from a Japanese student last week after he was found without travel documents, the New Straits Times reported Tuesday. According to the daily, the two policemen stopped a taxi carrying the 24-year-old student from Wakayama Prefecture on Nov 28 for a routine check.

The student, who had just finished an eight-month language course in Kuala Lumpur, claimed that they handcuffed him and demanded 2,000 ringgit from him. When he told them he did not have any money, they allegedly abused him verbally and then asked for his bank ATM number. The police then allegedly ordered the taxi driver to withdraw the money.
